The Cicada Reliquary is a ceremonial ancestral vessel crafted in the form of a cicada with articulated lacquered wing cases enclosing a central preservation chamber. Recovered from a hidden archive beneath an isolated mountain shrine complex, the object is believed to have served a central role in remembrance ceremonies and seasonal rites focused on the symbolism of cicadas as emblems of death, rebirth, renewal, and cyclical return.

The reliquary displays layered black lacquer, shell inlay decoration, silk-bound sealing structures, and a carefully arranged interior chamber containing preserved cicada shells alongside fragile memorial materials. Excavation surveys documented surrounding shrine archives lined with memorial tablets, suspended paper charms, ritual bells, and sealed ceremonial cabinets.

Surviving records reference the chamber that remembers the summer dead and describe priests listening for sounds emerging from sealed reliquaries during cicada emergence seasons. Archive examinations continue documenting intermittent clicking sounds originating from within the preservation chamber despite the absence of measurable biological or mechanical activity. Extended observation periods have occasionally been associated with memory-like impressions involving summer shrine environments, ancestral ceremonies, and seasonal remembrance practices.

DETAILS
Handling and Restrictions:

Acoustic isolation recommended. Wing cases and preservation chamber should remain sealed except under approved conservation circumstances. Extended listening sessions must be documented.

Keeper Notes:

The reliquary appears to function as a complete ceremonial system and should not be separated from its internal contents or associated memorial materials.

Research Notes:

Possible connection to ancestral remembrance traditions, memorial preservation practices, seasonal death symbolism, and memory-associated phenomena. Repeated references to the summer dead remain unresolved. The cicada-shaped construction appears intentionally symbolic, reinforcing themes of emergence, transformation, and return central to associated shrine traditions.
